Character:
HARRY, Harriet Tubman. Her people call her Moses. She's very black. She has a scar on her forehead. She wears a bandana.
HARRY: I had never been more nervous, more cautious, more jumpy. I wish I has worn a dress, but it was safer to travel as a man and my disguise was good. I imagined the laughter when the door opened and I took off my hat. 2 years. I had made it north and come back a few times always fighting the itch to go down that road. And there I was standing on it and all I wanted to do was run the other way. I could see the cabin. The lamp was burning. That was a good sign. Not too much moon another good sign. No black outs. I never had an easier trip. I crept up to the back door and pressed my ear to it, my heart knocking against the wood. Footsteps. Would my heart announce my presence? I got myself together and went to the front and knocked. A blast of warm, the smell of something good cooking. The light of a lamp surrounding him. “What you want?” He’s gruff, he don’t know it’s me. I throw off my hat. “John, it’s me, Harriet. I’ve come back to take you to freedom.” Why hasn’t he opened the door? Why hasn’t he opened his arms? He looks me over. I’m ready to jump into him. His voice lowers. “What you want?” “John, it’s me. It’s Harriet.” But I don’t say that. I just stare over his shoulder as she walks towards us. Actually she glides. It’s like she’s the one given off the light and warmth in the cabin. Her hand is smooth on his arm. Her voice soft with unmistakable ownership. “John, who’s this?” He had a new wife.
